Embroidered and woven patches are the two most popular thread-based patch styles. Both are durable, both come in any shape, and both can use any backing. But they're made in very different ways, and choosing the right one can make the difference between a logo that looks crisp and one that loses its details.
How embroidered patches are made
An embroidered patch starts with a piece of twill fabric. An embroidery machine stitches thread on top of the twill, color by color, following a stitch file created from your artwork (a process called digitizing). The thread sits on the surface, creating a raised, textured design.
Because embroidery thread is relatively thick, it is perfect for bold shapes, borders and lettering — but very small details can blur together.
How woven patches are made
A woven patch is made on a loom, the same way clothing labels are produced. Very fine threads are interlaced to form the fabric itself, so the design is built into the weave rather than stitched on top. The result is flat, thin and smooth, with much higher detail.
Side-by-side comparison
| Embroidered | Woven | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Raised and textured | Flat and smooth |
| Detail | Good for bold designs | Excellent for fine detail |
| Small text | Roughly 1/4" letters and up | Roughly 1/8" letters and up |
| Thickness | Thicker, more rigid | Thin and flexible |
| Look | Classic, premium | Refined, label-like |
When to choose embroidered
Choose embroidery when you want a classic look with real texture — the kind of patch people associate with uniforms, clubs and letterman jackets. It's ideal for:
- Bold logos with few colors and clear shapes
- Department and club emblems
- Patches where a raised feel adds value, like merchandise and awards
Embroidery also supports specialty threads such as metallic gold and silver or glow-in-the-dark, which add impact to ceremonial and commemorative designs.
When to choose woven
Choose woven when your design includes small lettering, thin lines or a lot of detail that must stay legible. It's ideal for:
- Logos with taglines or long names
- Detailed seals and crests (that you're authorized to reproduce)
- Lightweight garments and performance shirts where a thick patch would feel bulky
- Brand labels and small chest logos
Can you combine them?
Yes. A common approach is a woven center with an embroidered or merrowed border, giving you fine detail inside and a classic frame around it.
Cost considerations
Pricing depends on size, quantity and design. Embroidered patches are priced partly on how much of the surface is stitched — 50%, 75% or 100% coverage — while woven patches typically cover the whole surface by default. For detailed designs that would need 100% embroidery, woven can be the more economical option.
