Custom Sew-On Patches for Permanent Durability

Sew-on patches have no adhesive — they are stitched directly to the garment by hand or machine. It is the most secure, longest-lasting attachment method and the standard for uniforms, motorcycle vests, letterman jackets and anything that will be washed often.

A sew-on patch is finished with a plain, clean back so it can be stitched around the border onto almost any material: cotton, wool, leather, nylon, canvas and technical fabrics that cannot be heated.

Sewing is the right choice when a patch must stay put for years. Uniform shoulder patches, motorcycle club colors, scouting awards on sashes and varsity letters are traditionally sewn for that reason.

Sewing tips

  • Use polyester thread that matches the border color so stitches disappear into the merrowed edge.
  • A straight or zigzag stitch just inside the border works on most machines.
  • For thick leather vests, take the patch to a local tailor or leather shop with a heavy-duty machine.
  • Pin or temporarily glue the patch in place first so it does not shift.

If you want the convenience of iron-on with the security of sewing, we can add a light iron-on backing to hold the patch in position while you stitch it.

FAQ

Sew-on patch FAQs

Are sew-on patches better than iron-on?

Sew-on patches are more permanent and work on more fabrics, including leather and nylon. Iron-on is faster to apply. For frequently washed garments, sewing is best.

Can I sew a patch onto a leather vest myself?

It is possible with a leather needle and strong thread, but most people take large patches to a leather shop or tailor with a heavy-duty machine for a clean result.

Is there an extra charge for sew-on backing?

No. Sew-on is the standard finish. Other backings may add a small charge that will be shown on your quote.
